"Write the vision and make it plain" Hab 2:2

Vision-what is it?
It's the second day into the New Year of 2011 and I woke this morning with a challenge. What is my vision? What is my husband's vision? What exactly is a vision? I googled "vision" and I was directed to everything from eye care to names of computers. I found that corporations cast visions as well as churches. My personal favorite dictionary is the Noah Webster 1828 rendition and his definition of vision is:
1. The act of seeing external objects; actual sight. Faith here is turned into vision there. 2. The faculty of seeing; sight. Vision is far more perfect and acute in some animals than in man. 3. Something imagined to be seen, though not real; a phantom; a specter. No dreams, but visions strange. 4. In Scripture, a revelation from God; an appearance or exhibition of something supernaturally presented to the minds of the prophets, by which they were informed of future events. Such were the visions of Isaiah, of Amos, of Ezekiel, &c. 5. Something imaginary; the production of fancy. 6. Any thing which is the object of sight.
His definitiion of a visionary is: "One who forms impracticable schemes; one who is confident of success in a project which others perceive to be idle and fanciful."
I particularly like Mr. Webster's statement "faith here is turned into vision there." He also mentions that they are ideas that are from God and dropped into the minds of men. His example were the prophets of the Old Testament. It's the "declaring those things that are not as though they already were" Rom 4:17.
I believe the definition of a vision is different for everyone. The vision is as unique as a fingerprint or snow flake.
Run with the vision
The Need for a Vision
Why do we need a "vision"? I have a sense that the yearning for one is innate in all of us. In Proverbs 29:18 (The Message) states "If people can't see what God is doing,
they stumble all over themselves;
But when they attend to what he reveals,
they are most blessed."
In Habakkuk 2:2,3 God is speaking to the prophet and says to him "
2-3And then God answered: "Write this.
Write what you see.
Write it out in big block letters
so that it can be read on the run.
This vision-message is a witness
pointing to what's coming.
It aches for the coming—it can hardly wait!
And it doesn't lie.
If it seems slow in coming, wait.
It's on its way. It will come right on time."
I love that part that it says "it aches for the coming--it can hardly wait." It takes me back to childhood when I could hardly wait for my birthday or Christmas. I believe those are early beginnings of vision in training. Unfortunately as we grow older and start to experience disappointments in life we begin to become fearful of forecasting a vision. My husband used to say that he had no expectations because if he isn't expecting than he can't be disappointed. When I shared with him the scripture where David says, "in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation", he began to see that God wants us to expect Him to answer. Isn't that the essence of Faith?
Be Thou my vision
Vision-feel it!
In Habakkuk, the prophet describes his vision as "the burden which the prophet...saw" (1:1) It was the very thing that drove him to his knees, he lived it, ate it, it was the very essence of his being. He was driven to a point of despair as he would cry out to God and ask when there would be divine justice. God pointed him to an appointed time that if He would just wait it would all become clear. In my devotion today the author states "Before God blesses you with a plan of action, He will burden you with the problem you've been called to help solve." For Habakkuk it was the injustice and lawlessness that he saw all around him. For Chris and I we are burdened for hurting marriages and families torn apart by divorce. In my devotion the questions are asked, What's your all-consuming desire? What are you passionate about? What has God called and gifted you to do?
The Apostle Paul's burning desire was to reach the world for Christ. His enemies put him in jail and Paul turned it into his own personal writer's retreat and wrote 13 epistles. Those writings would end up changing more lives after he left the world than he could have ever hoped to touch while he was here.
So here we are, new beginnings in that it is the start of a new year. Do you have a vision? Have you kept it before you as you have run the race of life? Or has it been dashed to bits by the storms of life and left lifeless on the beach of disappointment? I have to admit that for Chris and I we have not gone untouched by the economic downturn that has affected so many. The vision that God gave us so many years ago to provide a place where couples can go to "recharge their batteries." To spend quality time, that encourages candid and open communication with each other. A place to rekindle the friendship and passion, to revisit the things that they have in common. Those qualities they at first admired in each other and were evident when they first met. A place that brings them back to their "First Love." This vision has for the most part been laid aside as we individually and as a couple licked our wounds and questioned if indeed this was a vision from God.
Never too old!
Vision-Finding it!
There are 2 important things about vision-1) it must come from God. There is a huge difference between setting our own goals and having a God-given vision. The difference is that when your vision is from God "it will surely come". God has a wonderful way of putting it all together without us having to orchestrate things. He will provide the open doors and resources at just the right time. God is faithful in that He will reveal to you your destiny and give you an opportunity to fulfill it. Make no mistake though it is possible to postpone it by resisting it. We can also choose to give our life to other things and thereby possibly missing it all together. The second thing about vision is that it will be connected to a certain field. For Joseph his dream or vision started in a field of wheat. Where has God called you? Medicine, education, finance, real estate, you name it. Wherever it is our calling is to be a blessing to others. Ask yourself this question "What would I be willing to withstand Satan over, in order to accomplish it?" What is God saying to you? What is He saying to me? Truly it is never to late to "find" your vision and follow it!"

Excellent writing and very well researched, we all need a vision as when we go it alone we are lost within ourselves and that is not what God calls us to be.
Blessings and Hugs
Happy New Year, I really appreciate what you wrote, as you searched the scriptures and that is right down my alley. I have started writing down visions, but before that I had to write out some of my shortcomings, in order that I may be more clear of Gods vision for me. Keep on shinning.
Hi Judi, It is good to see you on HubPages. I know that it was a very heartfelt message you wrote and I am very blessed to have a friend with the ability to teach in written word. I am always receiving visions from the Holy Spirit, and I don't ever really write them down, but I am shown by the Lord when things are prophetic. Thank you for sharing your in put about "Vision". I hope to reflect more of what God is revealing to me also. Much Love to you. CM
Vision to me is similar to our spiritual walk with Christ, what are we doing on our walk to reflect Him? Same as what do we see ourselves doing now and in the future to help others for Him, that is what i am getting from your post, very well stated.
I applaud your efforts here Judicastro. I and I'm sure many others have had and will have visions. It is correct in saying time will tell if the vision was clearly from God. I still am waiting on his answer on one and have experienced a negative outcome on what I thought was another, but I did learn something. Maybe that is the greatest part of visions, we learn something from them. ?
Great encouragement. I have been living off this verse in Habakkuk for a few years now. It is inspirational to me to move forward in the areas He has stirred passion in me as your article states.
Blessed by the read.
JUDI,
Thank you for writing this hub. Great Scripture. Noah Webster's 1828 dictionary is wonderful. Thanks for allowing it to speak truth as well.
Hi Judicastro thanks for writing this wonderful hub! I have enjoyed reading it, thanks for sharing this it's just what i need to read today.
Wishing you all the best this New Year!!!
What an inspiring hub! I know exactly what your husband means and I agree with him. However, one must distinguish between the expectation of reality to happen – like a fertilized embrio becoming a baby – and the expectation that fantasy/dream/hope will become reality. I loved this hub of yours. My visions became clearly visible in my mind. Have a great year, Judy. Enjoy God’s blessings daily. Tot weersiens.
A new vision from God's perspective, is what we all need:) Happy New Year!
How timely and encouraging! Judi, it does seem that the Spirit of God is hovering especially close over the word "vision". There seems to be great unction to clarify, have faith for, and move with a God-given vision this year...even if the vision is one that's collecting dust from days past. Up and useful!
Press in, dear sister, this is gonna be a great year!
Nice to meet you, Judi. I used to dance professionally with a partner. At the time we were Judi and Joni, but that was before I gave my heart to Christ. I now write adult Bible stories and am working on Health Secrets in the Bible. Have a good day with many blessings, JudyJudy
You've touched on a very important theme here. We must search for God's leading and embrace His direction. He has gifted each of us to be of use for His purpose. We will never find fulfillment anywhere else.
God richly bless you dear one! He will surely equip you with all that is needed for acts of service!
As I read your piece, I had two thoughts cross my mind. First, God gives us the capability to envision or visualize ourselves accomplishing something. That ability gives us confidence, self-esteem, and the experience to find out what we are capable of in this life. God-given visions on the other hand steer us to a sense of purpose for this life, a direction in which one can make a difference with the skills they either have or those they can learn. It is in these visions, that we find our real reason for being here. It may not always tie in with the things we "envision" for ourselves but it does provide a sense of destiny to those who listen and see. Thanks for a very good hub on this subject. WB
Great hub and "without a vision the people perish" Looking forward to what the new year holds. God is so good, He's so good to me.
Thanks so much for posting this. I am struggling with finding my way and vision of what God has planned for me and my family. Just last night my husband and I were discussing this very thing. I feel lost at this point in my life because I don't have a vision of where I am going. Actually, that's not entirely true. I am fearful of where God is sending me and I am resisting His call and vision for my life.I am like your husband in that I don't expect anything and so I am not disappointed. After reading this, I realize that God has given me gifts and I need to use them and get my doubting mind out of the way. It's harder not to use them. Thanks again. Your hubs always seem to be just what I need to hear.
I haven't thought of this scripture for a long time and everything you write is so true! Esp. true is that the vision has to come from God. I have been guilty of having my own vision and needless to say, it sort of fell apart. Now I am a little gunshy and wonder is this really from God or is it from my own motivation? How do you know??
This was written just in time for me!Thank you so much! You have touched and rejuvenated me!!
Hello sista I so miss you. I read your hub on your full time work. I will go back to comment. I was curious about the little grandchild of yours to be born in January?
I so loved your hub. You have a special gift to touch hearts. God has you where he needs you now. I think along the journey it is ours to discover visions and treasures Christ has for us. When we step out in Faith He shows us more of who He created us to be. A vision for me makes me feel alive because it gives me a purpose. My vision is to serve the maker and be His hands and feet. I am close to finishing a hub sitting on the fence and your hub touches on what I share. I am living the vision and more will be revealed as I go on forward. I recall you and I chatting. You were concerned about your finances. Well it looks like God has moved you into provision. He is our source and He knew all along where you would be next.He is meeting your needs. Your prayer was answered? I am inspired by the love in you. You are so precious. Hubs will be here waiting for you. There are seasons when writing is more affluent then other times. God will give you the window of time. It may not come as easy but He put you here to share that heart of yours. You are loved by a host of brothers and sisters. Me included. Love you sista. Hugs galore
up and awesome
Wonderful Hub my dear! We all need a vision, a purpose. I have learned that the Bible has a vision that is written out for us and when we follow it, our purpose is fulfilled. Voted-Up! Looking forward to seeing you over at my hubs! God Bless!!!
It's really good, that the only one that has the vision of our future is God! The closer we get to Him the more peace we can have in our present! Great hub!

We are of different spiritual paths but I love your exploration of what vision is. I really like the quote "Faith here is turned into vision there". Thank you.
